Subhranshu Mohan Satpathy of Bhubaneswar achieved the biggest sporting success of his life by winning the title in the 53rd Odisha Senior State Chess Championship, which concluded at Synergy Institute of Engineering & Technology in Dhenkanal today.
A final year mechanical student of MIT, Rourkela, Satpathy secured eight points from 10 rounds to became the new state senior champion. Subhasis Barik (Bhubaneswar) and Rajesh Nayak (Puri) also scored eight points each but only to be adjudged second and third respectively on the basis of Buchholz tie-break method.
Altogether 92 players participated in the six-day tournament, which carried a total cash prize of Rs 50,000. Satpathy, 21, received the top prize of Rs 10,000, while runner-up Barik pocketed Rs 7,000. The top-four finishers qualified to represent Odisha in the National Challengers Championship to be held this year at Bhopal.
Former Union Minister Brig K P Singhdeo handed over the trophy and cash prizes at the closing function. All Odisha Chess Association secretary Vivek Tibarewal, host Dhenkanal District Chess Association president Nabin Chandra Narayan Das and secretary Debabrata Bhatta were present on the occasion.
FINAL STANDINGS (Top 10): 1-3. Subhranshu Mohan Satpathy, Subhasis Barik, Rajesh Nayak (8 each); 4-7. Rabindra Kumar Ojha, Manoj Kumar Panigrahi, Satyabrata Kar, Pradeep Kumar Das; 9-10. Ansuman Samal, Rakesh Kumar Jena (7 each).
